Colorbond roof painting and recoating

Metal is a different job to tile. Different prep, different product, and rust dealt with before anything goes over it.

  • Rust treated back to clean metal, not painted over
  • Metal primer suited to Colorbond or bare galvanised
  • Gutters, fascia and downpipes to match

Colorbond doesn't fail the way tile does. There's no bedding to crumble and no pointing to crack. What happens instead is the factory coating chalks off, usually worst on the north and west faces, and the sheets go flat and powdery. Then the fixings start to weep rust down the sheet and it looks far worse than it's.

Recoating it properly means washing the chalk off rather than painting over it, treating every spot of rust back to clean metal, and using a metal primer that will actually bond. Then two coats. Skip the wash and the new coating lifts within a couple of summers.

The same applies to old corrugated galvanised iron on sheds, verandahs and homesteads. It takes a different primer again, but it comes up beautifully and it's a lot cheaper than resheeting.

How it goes, start to finish

  1. 1

    Photos and an address

A close up of the worst face tells us whether it's chalking, rust, or the coating letting go.

  2. 2

    We get up there

We check the fixings and the flashings as well as the sheets, because that's usually where the rust starts.

  3. 3

    A free quote

A price for the whole job, rust treatment and all. Free, and there's no deposit.

  4. 4

    The work

Wash, treat, prime, two coats. Then the after photos.

Questions we get asked

Is it worth recoating or should we resheet?

If the sheets are sound and it's chalking and surface rust, recoating is a fraction of the cost of resheeting and it will look new. If the sheets are perforated or the laps have gone, we'll tell you that a recoat is throwing money at it.

Can you match our existing Colorbond colour?

Close, yes. Roof membrane isn't the same product as factory Colorbond so it's a match rather than an identical, which matters if you're only doing part of a roof. On a whole roof it isn't an issue.

What about the rusty screws?

Weeping fixings get dealt with as part of the prep. If a lot of them have had it, replacing them is a line on the quote rather than a surprise on the invoice.
