Around here plenty of houses still run a wood heater or an open fire through winter, and the flue quietly loads up with creosote all season. Autumn is the time to deal with it, not the first cold night in June when you light it and the room fills with smoke.
While we're up there we check the flashing around the chimney base, which is one of the more common places for water to get in on an older house, and the cowl or cap if there's one.
It's a small job on its own. If you already have us there for a restoration or a repaint it makes sense to do it in the same visit rather than booking a second trade.
