Roof restoration

The full job on a tired roof. Everything loose comes up and goes back properly before a drop of colour goes on.

  • Every ridge and hip rebedded, not just repointed
  • Broken tiles replaced and matched before any coating
  • Primer then two full coats, not one thin one

A restoration isn't a paint job with a better name. If the bedding under your ridge capping has gone to sand and the pointing is cracked, coating over the top buys you a season and hides the problem while it keeps getting worse underneath.

So we start at the ridges. Every ridge and hip comes up, gets rebedded in fresh mortar and repointed in a flexible compound that moves with the roof instead of cracking off it. Broken and slipped tiles get replaced, matched to what's already up there. Then the whole roof is pressure cleaned back to the bare surface, sealed, and given two coats of membrane in the colour you picked.

It's the same process on tile or Colorbond, except metal skips the bedding and pointing and gets a rust treatment and a metal primer instead. Either way the gutters, fascia and downpipes get done in the same visit so the roofline reads as one thing.

What a restoration includes

  • High pressure clean, moss and lichen treated at the root
  • Every ridge and hip rebedded in fresh mortar
  • Repointed in flexible pointing, not sand and cement
  • Broken, cracked and slipped tiles replaced and matched
  • Valleys cleared and checked, flashings resealed
  • Primer or sealer, then two coats of roof membrane
  • Gutters, fascia, downpipes and verandah posts to match
  • Site cleaned up, and after photos sent through

What we don't do

  • Structural work to rafters or battens, that's a carpenter
  • Full roof replacement, which we'll tell you if you need
  • Asbestos cement sheeting, which we don't touch

How it goes, start to finish

  1. 1

    Photos and an address

A couple from the footpath is enough to tell you whether you're looking at a clean, a restoration or a replacement.

  2. 2

    We get up there

We check the bedding, the pointing, the valleys, the flashings and the gutters. Not just the sheets you can see from the ground.

  3. 3

    A free quote

What the roof needs and what it costs. The quote is free, and the colour chips come to the house.

  4. 4

    The work

Clean, rebed, repoint, replace, seal, coat. Usually three to five days on a single storey depending on the weather.

Questions we get asked

Do we need a restoration or just a clean?

If the tiles are sound and it's only moss and grime, a clean and a coat will do. If the pointing is cracked or the bedding is crumbling, cleaning it just exposes the problem. Send us photos and we'll tell you which one you're looking at, even if the answer is the cheaper one.

How long does it take?

A single storey tile roof is usually three to five days, spread over a week or so because each stage has to dry. Weather moves it. We'll give you a realistic window, not a best case one.

Will it match if you replace tiles?

We keep old profiles on hand, terracotta and concrete. On a roof that's being coated afterwards it disappears entirely, because the whole thing ends up the same colour.

How long does a restoration last?

Done properly, a coated roof holds its colour for many years before it wants a refresh, and the rebedding and repointing underneath is the part that lasts longest. The paint we use carries a 15 year product warranty.
